Russia is definitely an interesting place to be. Taking into account how fast the things are changing even in the Internet industry alone, it is hard to predict the number of smartphone users and the level of technological development in the upcoming years. 

There are around 62M internet users in Russia representing 44% of the population (according to the Internet World Stat), as well as almost everybody in Russia has a mobile device. The number of Internet users in Russia in 2014 will increase to 80 millions  or 71% of the total population. In terms of the time spent on social networks, Russia is #1 in the world with 10 average hours spent monthly on internet social networks, world average is 5 hours. The number of mobile phone users in Russia reached 102.2 million in 2012, and will climb to 110.9 million in 2016, according to eMarketer. There are 1.5 SIM cards per Russian inhabitant. Moreover, Russia had the highest GDP per capita among BRIC countries in 2011 and the highest rank by the total unique visitors of internet among the european countries.

According to the research made by Dow Jones VentureSource in 2012 Russia faces the investment venture boom  and occupies the 4th place on volumes of investments in tech startups among the European countries. According to the VentureSource research in 2006 total investments into Russian technological sector made only 5 million euros. However in the last four years the volume of investments grew almost by 10 times, with 25.900 million euros in 2009,  37.76 million euros in 2010, 185.79 million in 2011 and 236.55 million euros in 2012 which makes Russia the fifth largest country in terms of investments in tech companies.
